GIANT MOA

The Giant Moa was the tallest bird ever, standing up to 12 feet high, but oddly they seem to have had no wings. They were a member of the ratite family like the emu or ostrich.  There were 9 species of moa at one time in New Zealand.

The Giant Moa, like all other moa species probably went extinct sometime in the early 1500’s due to over hunting when Maori people arrived in New Zealand.

ILIN ISLAND CLOUDRUNNER

The Ilin Island Cloudrunner is not at all related to Luke Skywalker.  It was a fluffy coated rat the size of a house cat that lived high in the mountains of Ilin Island in the Philippine Island group.  It is only know from one specimen collected April 4, 1953 by Pablo Soriano.  He gave this specimen to the Museum of Natural History in DC.   There are 4 types of cloudrunners, also known as cloud rats.  All cloudrunners belong to the group Crateromys.  Not much is known about this elusive group of aniamls.  The Panay Cloudrunner for instance was unknown to scientists until 1987, and wasn't even labeled as a species until 1996. The Ilin Island Cloudrunners lived in trees and were nocturnal.  They were believed to eat fruits and leaves in the mountain forests.   Most of the forests on Ilin Island have been cut down by people, so it seems that they succumbed to habitat loss soon after Soriano's specimen was collected. KAWEKAWEAU (DELCOURT'S GIANT GECKO)

The Kawekaweau was the largest member of the gecko family that lived in New Zealand.  It was nearly 24 inches long, which is about twice as large as any other gecko species ever known.  It was the width of a man's wrist and had reddish stripes running the length of its body. Scientists thought that the Kawekaweau was simply a legend for a long time. The name Delcourt comes from the French scientist who rediscovered the only known specimen of of the Kawekaweau in the Natural History Museum of Marseille in 1986. The last recorded living Kawekaweau was in 1870 by a Maori chief.  It is thought that the arrival of Europeans and the invasive species they brought; rats, cats, and weasels took their toll on the Kawekaweau. Seeing the real "Martha" the last passenger pigeon

I took these pictures while visiting the Lost Bird Project sculptures with my kids in DC. The real Martha's body was sent to the Museum of Natural History in DC after her death and was put on display to mark the 100th anniversary of the passenger pigeons extinction September 1, 1914. We also visited the Cincinnati Zoo which is where the last passenger pigeon, Martha, and the last Carolina parakeet went extinct.  (Ironically the real Martha was on display in DC, while the Cincinnati Zoo renovated their Passenger Pigeon Memorial over the summer)
